Audemars Piguet Introduces the 2016 Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Watch in Gold

Audemars Piguet’s 2016 Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in yellow gold is a gilded tribute to the Swiss watchmaker’s original Royal Oak sensation from the Seventies. First launched in 1972, the wristwatch was the first high-ticket timepiece presented in stainless steel—an audacious idea that soon established a new industry standard. In 1984, Jacqueline Dimier designed the Royal Oak’s Perpetual Calendar model, featuring the same iconic octagonal case secured with eight hexagonal screws. Now gussied up in 18-karat yellow gold for the case and bracelet (complemented by yellow-gold hour markers), the new edition still comprises the same complication as the original.

Set within Audemars Piguet’s traditional “Grand Tapisserie”–patterned dial are three subdials located at 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, and 9 o’clock, displaying month, date, and day, respectively. Weeks are recorded around the inner bezel. A “leap year” indication (first introduced to wristwatches by Audemars Piguet in 1955) also sits at 12 o’clock while another subdial at 6 o’clock follows the phases of the moon.

The self-winding movement—with a 40-hour power reserve—is inspired from the manufacture’s classic Calibre 2120 (released in 1967) and can be monitored through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The watch will be available in March for a price as yet to be announced.
